Shot primarily on a multi-plane utilizing ink, branches, paper cutouts, and baking soda, this piece was created for projection as part of the theatrical performance “Rushes” by pioneering dance company Pilobolus, choreographed in collaboration with Inbal Pinto and
Avshalom Pollak. During the performance, the film, representing the hallucinatory dreams of one of the protagonists, is projected onto a screen procured from an old trunk and stretched between the limbs of
the other dancers.
Originally screened at the Guggenheim as part of its Works and Process series, “Rushes” officially premiered at the American Dance Festival before opening at the Joyce Theatre in New York and is now part of Pilobolus’ active repertoire. In this version, the music has been changed and the film slightly modified for viewing independent of its original context.
